As if a
mountain bike race that gains 40,000 feet in elevation isn’t enough of a feat,
Eric Thompson is providing added motivation to complete the Breck Epic, a 6-day
stage race in July. The managing broker
of Slifer Smith & Frampton Real Estate in Summit County
“I figure
this will give me added motivation to complete each day’s course, as every additional
pedal stroke will raise more funds for the community,” Thompson says. Thompson serves on The Foundation’s Board of
Trustees and feels strongly about the work of The Foundation, as well as its
relationship to his business. “The Summit
Foundation is an integral part of the community,” Thompson says. “The impact of
The Foundation is part of what makes Summit County
A regular
participant in the Summit Mountain Challenge and Mountain States Cup mountain
bike race series, as well as a past participant in the Leadville 100 mountain
bike race, Thompson has been training for the Breck Epic since January – traveling
to the front range during the winter months to find dry land for long training
rides.
In its
inaugural year this year, the Breck Epic is a 6-day
ultra-endurance mountain bike stage race being held July 5th through
10th in Breckenridge. After a
10-mile time-trial on day one, athletes will contest 5 subsequent stages,
spending 4 to 8 hours on course each day, most of it over 10,000 feet. Each stage starts and finishes in
Breckenridge and athletes that complete the race will have ridden 200 miles of
Breckenridge’s backcountry trails.
The Summit
Foundation is a community foundation that raises funds to grant back to the
community. Nonprofit organizations that
provide programs in art & culture, education, environment, health and human
services and sports and recreation are eligible to apply to The Foundation twice
per year. In fact, over $1 million in
grant and scholarship awards will be recognized to 86 nonprofit organizations
and 48 students at The Summit Foundation’s annual grant and scholarship awards
on June 25th. The award
reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Conference Center
To make a contribution to Eric Thompson’s campaign, donate online at www.summitfoundation.org and designate the contribution to Breck Epic/Thompson. Pledges by the foot will also be taken directly

From: Mike McCormack and Jim Jimenez
To:
All Summit County Mountain Bikers, all SFTS members, all
interested parties
When:
Friday, June 26th, 6:30-8:30pm
Where:
The Backcountry Brewery, Frisco, CO
Why:
To discuss the current state of our organization and its
future. Mike Zobbe will be transitioning from his role as SFTS President into
one of ambassador and ombudsman. That leaves his spot as President open to
nomination. Since we’ll be electing a new president, we should also take
a look at the other positions on the board. Chris Hart and Marc
“Kid” Carlisle have served as
secretary and treasurer for several years. It’s probably time to
acknowledge their considerable contributions and invite nominees to assume
those roles.
Our organization has a long and impressive resume here in Summit County, but I think that all would agree that it’s time to stop leaning on the same folks and invite some new blood and fresh energy. The path of the SFTS in the immediate and long-term future will also be discussed. At the end of this session we hope to have a polarized view of how best to proceed with the organization as well as a new executive and advisory board to help implement established goals.
Thanks in advance for bringing your ideas, your opinions and your energy to this meeting. Long live the SFTS!

Mike McCormick is bringing the the Breck Epic into Breckenridge on July 5th - and has a number of interesting things going on besides the stage race. One thing that might be of interest to the SFTS is his Greenspeed Project - details follow.....
====================
The Breck Epic MTB Stage Race (July 5-10,
2009) is a 6-day ultra-endurance backcountry affair to be held in the
massive tangle of backcountry surrounding Breckenridge, CO. As a race
its mission is to showcase the incredible work that visionary land
managers here have accomplished by pairing an ambitious and shared
vision with a 'let's roll our sleeves up and get this thing done
together' mentality. It is one of a small few such races in US, and
certainly among the most difficult.

We got an email the other day from a member inquiring about affordable housing projects and if that will somehow conflict with trail connections and existing public open space. We've had a chance to review the County's ideas for where to locate possible housing projects - none of the proposals had any impacts on major trailheads or were located on any public open space lands.
There are a lot of ideas being floated right now on where to build housing - but Summit County government, and the Town of Breckenridge have demonstrated a commitment on trails. Particularly, county government and the BOCC is very aware that their recent tax question in 2008 (Ref 1A) was passed with a huge backing from the open space and trails advocates.

(We didn't get this posted until now - and the comment period is ended - but this issue warrants attention - the information comes from IMBA. )
IMBA urges mountain bikers to help preserve some of Moab's most famous trails. A new Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plan would lease land parcels for oil and gas extraction near iconic trails such as Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, Barlett Wash and Tusher Canyon, turning sections of trail into heavily used access roads. IMBA respects the need for domestic energy production, but believes Moab is better served by protecting its world-class recreational assets.
If these parcels are leased and put into production, the BLM will be required to provide adequate access in the form of roads capable of accommodating trucks and other large vehicles. Parts of these roads would be located on or near some of Moab's most famous mountain biking trails.
IMBA believes the BLM should balance the need for energy production with the benefits of recreation and tourism. Please tell BLM officials to protect mountain biking and Moab's sustainable recreation economy by withdrawing parcels near Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, Barlett Wash and Tusher Canyon. The deadline for comments is Dec. 3.
